Keats was intentional about the urban setting of the book and the experiences Peter had because he “…wanted to make sure didn’t make Peter a white kid colored brown” (Pinkney, 2021). Keats once said that he wanted his book to “lead all children to genuine self-acceptance” (Pinkney, 2021). With it being published during the Civil Rights Movement, this book has been credited as one of the most important picture books ever written, helping break down barriers of race.
